Six people lost their lives, and five others were injured in a road accident in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident involved a trailer carrying tiles, a lorry loaded with soft drinks, and two tricycles, occurring at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko on Akanran Road, in the Ona Ara Local Government Area on the morning of October 14, 2024.
The injured individuals were all passengers in the tricycles, including a pupil whose mother reportedly died.
Four of the injured were taken to the nearby Amuloko City Hospital, where two primary school children were treated as outpatients, while two others with severe injuries were admitted for further care.
The deceased were transported to a hospital whose identity has not yet been confirmed.
A staff member from the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency attributed the accident to the trailer’s brake failure while descending the slope of the road.
An eyewitness recounted, “When the trailer lost control, it crushed a tricycle popularly called Keke NAPEP. The witness added, “We learnt that six persons died while five persons sustained injuries. They have all been conveyed away from here.”
In addition to the tricycles and lorries involved, two other cars were damaged in the series of accidents.
Sympathizers, prevented from burning the vehicles, blamed the drivers—who are currently at large—and suggested that the accident could have been mitigated if the driver of the trailer had swerved into a ditch rather than heading towards the incoming tricycles.
Raji Wale, the Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, confirmed the admission of several victims. “Four patients were taken to this hospital. The accident occurred in the early hours of today (Monday). Six victims were brought here with varying degrees of injury. Some were taken to other hospitals. We were able to absorb the ones brought here. Two have been treated as out-patients and have been stabilized and left,” Wale explained.
He added, “Two kids have been treated and they are downstairs. One of them, I was told, was in the Keke NAPEP with his mother. The mother died. The other two with severe injuries have been admitted and are being treated. They have been optimized, and we are taking care of them presently.”
