Following the Inspector General of Police’s order to withdraw personnel from the 23 council secretariats on Monday morning, a group believed to support FCT Minister Nyesom Wike descended on the Emohua Council Secretariat in Rivers State to protest the recent election results.
This group, consisting of loyalists to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contends that an unknown party, APP, cannot legitimately win the council.
Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters barricaded the main entrance to the secretariat, padlocking the gate and securing the smaller entrance. They also seized control of the administrative building, signaling their intent to prevent the newly sworn-in Chairman, David Omereji, from taking office.
At the center of the conflict is the legitimacy of Chidi Lloyd’s chairmanship. The supporters recognize Lloyd as the duly elected chairman and are demanding that he be permitted to complete his tenure.
In light of the unrest, PDP Emohua Council Chairman Morrison Jim addressed the public, reiterating the party’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law. “We respect the legal process and have chosen to abide by the court’s decision,” Jim stated. “Our focus remains on serving the people and promoting the well-being of our good people of Emolga.”
