Borno State is grappling with a cholera outbreak, with 451 cases reported following catastrophic flooding caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam.
The flooding has severely impacted Maiduguri and neighboring areas, displacing nearly 2 million residents, destroying health facilities, and disrupting access to clean water and power.
During an emergency meeting on October 4, 2024, Borno State’s Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malam Gana, confirmed the outbreak.
“We are having a cholera outbreak in Borno State, which is highly contagious and can be transmitted via the fecal-oral route with an approximate incubation period of 2-5 days,” he stated....Read Full Article [Click Here>]
The commissioner highlighted that the flooding has exacerbated the situation, leading to increased risk factors such as poor sanitation, open defecation, and insufficient clean water supply, especially in densely populated IDP camps. Affected areas include Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, Konduga, Mafa, and Monguno.
“I appeal to all line ministries, agencies, departments, and partners to join hands and provide optimal responses in order to control the current cholera outbreak,” Prof. Gana urged.
He also commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his support to flood victims and his commitment to health sector improvements, emphasizing the media’s role in raising awareness about cholera prevention.
