LEA Teachers Seek Wike’s Intervention In Implementation Of Peculiar Allowances

Teachers employed by the Local Education Authority (LEA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are pleading with the FCT Minister, Mallam Muhammad Bello, to intervene and compel the area council chairmen to implement the approved Peculiar Allowances.

Speaking at a press briefing, Comrade Ephraim Ogar, a representative of the teachers, expressed concern that the area council chairmen have failed to act on the directive to implement the allowance for over a year.

“It is disheartening that the peculiar allowance has not been implemented for over a year, while teachers under the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) have been enjoying the benefit for the same period,” Ogar said.

He urged the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to remind the FCT Minister of the issue and request his urgent intervention.

Hassan Dogo, another LEA teacher, lamented the marginalization of LEA teachers by the area council chairmen. “We are treated like slaves, doing most of the work but receiving salaries like slaves,” he said.

“We do not enjoy any benefits from the government. Even the minimum wage of N35,000 is not fully implemented, with Level 5 teachers still earning less than the approved amount,” Dogo added....Read Full Article [Click Here>]

The teachers highlighted the disparity in the implementation of the N40,000 Peculiar Allowance, which has been enjoyed by UBEB teachers but not by LEA teachers for over a year.

It was recalled that the FCT Minister had previously set up a six-man committee to address the grievances of local government employees, including the non-payment of allowances and deductions. However, the committee’s efforts have not yet resolved the issue of the Peculiar Allowance for LEA teachers.

The teachers are appealing to the FCT Minister, NUT, and NULGE to address their concerns and ensure the immediate implementation of the approved Peculiar Allowance to improve their welfare and morale.
