David Coote: Roy Keane, Neville, Wright, Carragher Discuss Future of EPL Referee

Premier League referee David Coote was suspended earlier this week after a video showing him allegedly making derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former coach, Jurgen Klopp.

Premier League refereeing body PGMOL is still investigating, and fans, pundits, and former players have been weighing in on the matter. Ex-Premier League stars Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher have shared their thoughts on his future.

The 42-year-old was the referee in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday and remains one of the most experienced officials.

In the video doing rounds on social media, Coote slams Klopp, who called him out after the Reds faced Burnley in 2020.

A new video shared on social media allegedly shows Coote snorting white powder during Euro 2024 in Germany.

The two Manchester United legends said Coote should be allowed to referee in the Premier League again.

I think he probably should get a suspension of some kind…It’s not a sackable offensive respect of him never working again…I think there is a way back for him in the Premier League,” Neville said via Football365.
“He’d have to obviously take some sort of punishment, hold his hand up and certainly have a break from the game,” Keane added.
Carragher and Wright feel Coote cannot work again as a Premier League referee.

“I just think because of what he said about Liverpool, I think it makes it difficult[not to sack him]…think it’s very tough for him to referee around,” Carragher said.

Wright agreed with Carragher’s sentiments. The football world is eagerly awaiting the final decision on PGMOL.
