A review of the 2024 Nigeria Residential Energy Demand Side Report by SaharaReporters reveals a shift among Nigerians towards charcoal and firewood due to rising cooking gas prices under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The report, released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), surveyed households in Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ekiti, Oyo, Enugu, Kwara, Plateau, Kano, and Sokoto states. As of the report’s publication, the price of cooking gas was N1500/kg.
Out of 63.7 million surveyed households, 40.7% reported purchasing firewood, with an average expenditure of N10,681. This firewood is sourced from farms, forests, and plantations. The reliance on these fuels has led to issues for 16.7% of households, including missed schooling, health problems, and increased violence.
Bauchi state has the highest firewood usage at 91%, while Sokoto follows at 77.8%. Additionally, 21.6% of households purchased charcoal, with 22% reporting an average use of 117.0 kg for various purposes. Some households (11.3%) utilize agricultural residues and plastic waste. Only 19.4% of households continue to use cooking gas.
“The average monthly expenditure on LPG across the nine states in the past 30 days prior to the survey day was ₦10,239.7. Analysis across the state indicates that Sokoto state spent the highest amount with ₦12,439.3, followed by Enugu state (₦11,852.2) while Ekiti state spent the lowest amount (₦8,213.5),” the report states.
