A married man from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Moses Remayi, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the fatal assault of his girlfriend after she refused to answer a phone call.
Remayi’s attack, driven by suspicion of infidelity over a missed call, resulted in the victim suffering for several days before dying from her injuries.
The incident occurred when Remayi became enraged after his girlfriend refused to answer a call from an unknown number. Believing the call was from another man, he confronted her, leading to a violent altercation.
In court, Remayi admitted his anger escalated when he called the number himself and a man answered.
He brutally assaulted his girlfriend with a steel chair, fists, and feet, locking the door and continuing the attack for nearly an hour. After the attack, a neighbor, Cynthia Chaleka, discovered the victim severely injured and half-naked. She was rushed to the hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries days later.
Remayi was arrested, and the iron bar used in the attack was recovered. While he claimed the violence began after his girlfriend bit him, the court rejected his defense and found him guilty of murder.
Sentenced by Bulawayo High Court Judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa, Remayi will serve 18 years in prison. The tragic event has stunned the local community, with many expressing outrages at the brutal nature of the attack.
