A former Libyan international goalkeeper has accused Nigeria’s Super Eagles of sabotaging Libya’s chances to qualify for the AFCON 2025 tournament.
The accusation comes after Libya’s failure to secure a spot in the competition, despite their 2-1 victory over Nigeria.
Nigeria and Benin Republic ultimately clinched the two AFCON 2025 spots from Group D, while Libya and Rwanda missed out. According to CAF Online, Nigeria had already secured qualification before the final match day, leaving the other three teams to rely on results and luck.

Jamal Al-Wakhi, a former Libyan goalkeeper, has strongly criticized the Super Eagles, alleging intentional sabotage to prevent Libya from qualifying. He wrote on his Facebook page, as quoted by Libya 24, “We are suffering from the repercussions of this match, which is the reason for our problems in not qualifying for the African Cup.
Nigeria took revenge on Libya in football and got 3 points, won the case in CAF, gave the match to Rwanda and underestimated Libyan football. So who is responsible for all this chaos that happened?”
However, Al-Wakhi’s claims are not entirely accurate. Nigeria’s loss to Rwanda had no impact on their qualification, as Libya’s chances depended on beating Benin by at least 4-0. Instead, Libya drew 0-0 with Benin, and even if Nigeria had won, Libya would still have failed to qualify.
