The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man who had been posing as a police officer attached to a court in the Ungogo Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, revealed that the suspect had been extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public by offering to help them secure the bail of their relatives.
The statement read: “On 18/11/2024 at about 01:30pm, a credible information was received about a suspicious individual parading himself as a Police Officer attached to a Court in Ungogo LGA, Kano State and extorting unsuspecting members of the public.”
Upon receiving the information, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Salman Dogo Garba, instructed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ungogo Division to ensure the arrest of the suspect.
The statement continued: “Consequently, the suspect, one Hamisu Ibrahim, ‘m’, aged 42 years old, of Jangaru Village in Ungogo LGA, Kano State, was arrested. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been extorting money from innocent citizens by posing as a Court Duty Police Officer. The police emphasized that this arrest reflects the commitment of the Police Command to cleanse the system, protect the public, and eliminate individuals undermining the efforts of the police in Kano State. The Command further reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the public and maintaining law and order.
The Commissioner of Police also expressed gratitude to the people of Kano State for their cooperation and support, while warning that impersonation and other criminal activities would not be tolerated. He stressed that perpetrators would be tracked down, arrested, and prosecuted.
