The body of Liam Love, a former British soldier killed while fighting in Ukraine, has returned to his parents’ home in County Fermanagh.
The 24-year-old will be laid to rest after a funeral service at St. Patrick’s Church in Derrygonnelly on Saturday. Liam had served four years with the Royal Anglian Regiment and was involved in training Ukrainian recruits following Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
According to his family, this experience deeply impacted him. Earlier this year, he left the British Army to join the fight in Ukraine.
Three weeks ago, his family received the tragic news that he had been killed by a mortar strike in Lyman.
Raised in Coventry, plans are underway for a memorial service at Coventry Cathedral to honor his memory at a later date.
Friends of Liam have also raised funds to plant a tree in his memory in Coventry’s War Memorial Park.

Liam had formed bonds with Ukrainian fighters who came to the UK for training.
“The training was all too short because the men were needed back in Ukraine as quickly as possible,” Michael said. “Liam befriended and kept in touch with them when they went back to Ukraine, but a lot were killed.”
“He gave me a sense that he wanted to be more involved but never did I think that involvement would one day lead him to actually crossing the border into Ukraine.”
Michael added, “He empathised with the Ukrainian people and their plight and I think he felt that he didn’t give enough to the Ukrainian recruits when he was part of the training package. So he wanted to go out and help them to free themselves from what the Russians were doing at the time.”
Liam informed his parents last Christmas that he was leaving the British Army, but it was only later that they discovered he intended to go to Ukraine in May.
