BREAKING: Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Key Figure in Annulled June 12 Election, Passes Away

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from 1989 to 1993, has passed away.

Born on October 2, 1941, he died in a Virginia hospital in the United States. As chief electoral officer, Nwosu oversaw the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest. Despite orders from the Ibrahim Babangida military regime to halt the announcement of results, Nwosu released many of the election results. The election was ultimately annulled.
