A middle-aged man identified as Bidemi, who fell unconscious after reportedly being chased by police officers into a canal, has died. He was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he passed away early this morning, October 18.
An update from the X user who reported the incident revealed the man’s death. Earlier, it was reported that the woman who shared the story online mentioned he was her friend’s husband. She posted a distressing video of residents and Lagos State Fire Service staff pulling his unconscious body from the canal.
According to her account, the officers, who were not in uniform, profiled Bidemi as a Yahoo boy due to his tattoo, prompting him to flee when they brandished their guns. He was chased until he fell into the canal. Eyewitnesses have alleged that the officers took the victim’s money and shoes before leaving the scene.
