Lagos State is taking a significant step towards environmental sustainability by announcing a ban on single-use plastics and sachet water, effective January 2025.
The decision, confirmed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a stakeholders’ workshop on October 3rd, aims to address the growing problem of plastic waste and promote a healthier environment.

While the government is committed to this goal, stakeholders have expressed concerns about the immediate implementation of the ban, advocating for a phased approach. They believe this would ensure better compliance and ease the burden on businesses and consumers, particularly during the current economic challenges.
“We need to ensure a smooth transition and avoid unnecessary hardship,” said one stakeholder. “A phased implementation would allow for better preparation and adaptation.”
