As Nigeria nears its 64th Independence Day on October 1, Professor Kenneth Azaigba from the Federal University Dutse has urged President Bola Tinubu to reintroduce the fuel subsidy to alleviate the economic strain on citizens.
In a recent interview in Makurdi, Azaigba emphasized that reinstating the subsidy could significantly help revitalize the struggling economy and soften the blow of current policies.

“We cannot run an economy like ours without subsidies. The subsidy management regime has to be looked at. Electricity tariffs and fuel prices are unreasonably high, and without mitigating these, we won’t be able to breathe in Nigeria again,” he stated. He called for a reassessment of the government’s economic strategies, emphasizing that they should aim to enhance both the economy and the quality of life for Nigerians.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s independence, Azaigba acknowledged some progress but lamented the nation’s inability to fully exploit its resources for meaningful economic transformation. He advocated for innovative solutions to tackle ongoing economic challenges.
