Gov Aiyedatiwa Orders Release Of 19 Inmates

Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has ordered the release of 19 inmates serving various sentences across state prisons.

This decision is part of a broader initiative involving 117 convicts who are set to benefit from the governor’s prerogative of mercy, reflecting a commitment to rehabilitation within the justice system.

The governor’s directive follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which emphasizes the importance of second chances.

While 19 inmates will be granted outright release, others will see their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, and several will have their sentences reduced. The announcement, made by State Attorney General Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, noted that the release orders were signed on September 27, 2024, to take effect on October 1, aligning with the national celebrations. “The Advisory Council assessed each application, ensuring that its recommendations adhered to established guidelines,” Ajulo stated.

This compassionate gesture illustrates Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to decongesting correctional facilities and reinforcing the belief in the potential for change and redemption.
