Seventeen governors in Nigeria have formed committees to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage across their states. These states include Ogun, Ekiti, Sokoto, Kebbi, Osun, Enugu, Borno, Zamfara, Kogi, Kwara, Gombe, Kano, Taraba, Delta, Rivers, Jigawa, and Abia.
This initiative follows the Federal Government’s commencement of the new wage payments to its 1.2 million workers last Thursday. According to Accountant General Oluwatoyin Madein, civil servants will start receiving the new wage from September. Edo, Lagos, and Adamawa have already begun payments, with Anambra set to implement the wage by October.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra announced plans to start payments next month, coupled with educational reforms, including refunds for school fees already paid. However, an NLC official cautioned against celebrating the new wage, citing its diminished value due to rising costs, stating, “If the Federal Government says they want to start paying, I don’t think it is something that should be celebrated.”
