Court Rejects Edo Assembly’s Appeal, Upholds Shaibu as Deputy Governor

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal filed by the Edo State House of Assembly, reaffirming that Comrade Philip Shaibu remains the legitimate Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The Appeal Court upheld the ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had nullified Shaibu’s impeachment and ordered his reinstatement. The court emphasized that any person claiming to be the Deputy Governor other than Shaibu would face legal consequences.

This decision comes after the Edo State House of Assembly impeached Shaibu on April 8th, alleging perjury and leaking government secrets. The court also overturned the appointment of Omobayo Godwins as the new Deputy Governor, appointed in place of Shaibu. The Inspector General of Police has been instructed to provide necessary security to Shaibu to facilitate his return to office and the continuation of his duties as Deputy Governor until the end of his term.
