Obasanjo responds to the allegation of his father being Igbo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has addressed rumors of his Igbo heritage for the first time, describing them as amusing. In a meeting with Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association in Abeokuta, Obasanjo emphasized that he believes every Nigerian has the right to reside in any part of the country.

“We all have a stake in this nation,” Obasanjo stated. “The Yorubas, Igbos, and Hausas fought together not to force Igbos to leave, but to encourage them to stay.”

According to his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo further said, “It just amuses me” when asked about the Igbo origin claims.

During the meeting, the Ndigbo group sought Obasanjo’s assistance in establishing the Owerri Central Market, aiming to make it the largest market in Nigeria. “I am pleased that it is being reconsidered and I am hopeful that this time, we can all bring it to fruition,” Obasanjo said. “It will be huge, the very first of its type.”

Obasanjo also commended the governor for his interest in the project and expressed confidence in leading the marketing team for the Owerri Central Market in the future.
