EFCC’s Twitter account disappears after Yahoo Boys threatened cyber warfare against anti-graft agency

The official Twitter handle of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), @officialEFCC, has vanished from the platform. Checks conducted by Peoples Gazette on Wednesday revealed that the account, which had amassed over 2.2 million followers, was no longer accessible.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that the account has been down for three days. He attributed the issue to a network problem and stated that the agency’s ICT department is working to resolve it.

“Our ICT department is working on it. They have been on it for almost three days now,” Oyewale told The Gazette. “We are hoping it will come up again.”

The disappearance of the EFCC’s Twitter account comes amid allegations of Internet fraudsters threatening cyber warfare against the agency for its allegedly heavy-handed tactics in combating online fraud. The threats were made on Reddit and other forums last weekend.

Despite a ban on after-dark raids announced by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, agents have resumed midnight arrests.

It remains unclear if the disappearance of the EFCC’s Twitter account is directly related to the threats or if it is the result of a sanction from Twitter for violations or a deactivation by the agency’s account managers.

The EFCC’s main website and other social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram appear to be unaffected as of Thursday morning.
