EFCC Spokesperson Confirms Yahaya Bello’s Wanted Status

Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has reiterated that former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello remains on the commission’s wanted list.

In an interview on Nigeria Info 99.3FM, Oyewale stated, “As long as Yahaya Bello is concerned, he remains wanted. Until we’re able to bring him to justice, he will retain that status.”

He explained that declaring a fleeing suspect wanted is a common practice worldwide, especially when individuals resist arrest, go into hiding, or make themselves unavailable.

Oyewale declined to disclose the specific measures the EFCC is taking to apprehend Bello, citing the need for the commission to operate within the rule of law.

The EFCC declared Bello wanted on April 18, 2024, after he failed to appear for arraignment on an N80.2 billion money laundering case. The commission had obtained a warrant for his arrest from the Federal High Court in Abuja.

However, the EFCC’s attempt to apprehend Bello on April 17 was thwarted by security personnel assigned to the incumbent Kogi Governor, Usman Ododo.
